How to Crochet the Knit Stitch (Waistcoat Stitch) – Step-by-Step Tutorial
Knit Stitch, also known as the Waistcoat Stitch, is a crochet technique that mimics the look of knitted fabric. It creates a dense and structured fabric, making it ideal for hats, bags, and warm garments.
✨ Skill Level: Beginner to Intermediate
🧶 Materials Needed:
- Worsted weight yarn (or any yarn of your choice)
- A crochet hook one size larger than recommended (to keep stitches loose)
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)
Step 1: Create Your Foundation Chain
- Chain any number of stitches + 1 extra for turning (Example: Chain 21 for a swatch).
- Turn your work and prepare for Row 1.
Step 2: Work the First Row in Single Crochet
- Single crochet (sc) into the second chain from the hook.
- Continue making single crochets across the row.
- Turn your work and chain 1.
Step 3: Start the Knit (Waistcoat) Stitch
- Insert your hook into the “V” of the stitch below, between the two vertical bars (instead of under the normal top loops).
- Yarn over and pull up a loop.
- Yarn over again and pull through both loops on the hook—this completes one Knit Stitch!
- Repeat across the row, always inserting the hook into the “V” of the stitch below.
- Turn your work and chain 1.
Step 4: Continue the Knit Stitch for Additional Rows
- Keep repeating Step 3 across each row.
- The more rows you make, the more the fabric will resemble knit stitches!
- Continue until the project reaches your desired length.
Step 5: Finish Off & Weave in Ends
- Cut your yarn and pull through the last loop to secure.
- Use a tapestry needle to weave in any loose ends.
✨ Tips for Success
✔ Keep loose tension so it’s easier to insert the hook into the “V” of the stitch.
✔ Use a larger hook to prevent stitches from getting too tight.
✔ This stitch works great for structured projects like bags and hats!
