“Happiness is a basket full of yarn and time to create.”
– The Wooly Owl
The single crochet stitch (sc) is one of the most essential crochet stitches. It’s simple, sturdy, and used in countless projects like blankets, scarves, and amigurumi. If you’ve already mastered the chain stitch, you’re ready to take the next step and learn the single crochet!
Materials Needed
- Crochet Hook: L 9.00 mm crochet hook
- Super Bulky Yarn: Lion Brand Wool Ease Thick & Quick – color Blossom
- Scissors
Using super bulky yarn and a larger hook makes it easier to see your stitches and practice comfortably.
Step 1: Make a Foundation Chain
- Begin by making a slip knot on your hook.
- Crochet at least 10 chain stitches (ch) to practice.
- Turn your work so you’re ready to crochet into the chain stitches.
Step 2: Insert Your Hook
- Skip the first chain from the hook (this helps keep the row even).
- Insert your hook into the second chain from the hook.
- Make sure you go under both loops of the chain for a sturdier stitch.
Step 3: Yarn Over (YO)
- Wrap the working yarn over the hook from back to front.
- Use the hook to pull the yarn through the chain.
- You should now have two loops on your hook.
Step 4: Complete the Stitch
- Yarn over (YO) again.
- Pull through both loops on the hook.
- You’ve made your first single crochet (sc) stitch!
Step 5: Continue Across the Row
- Insert your hook into the next chain.
- Repeat Steps 3 & 4 until you reach the end of the row.
- You should have one single crochet stitch per chain, minus the skipped chain at the start.
Step 6: Turn & Start a New Row
- Chain 1 (ch 1) – This is your turning chain and helps keep your stitches even.
- Turn your work so you’re crocheting into the previous row.
- Insert your hook into the first stitch of the row (not the turning chain).
- Continue making single crochet stitches across.
Tips for a Neat Single Crochet Stitch
✅ Keep your tension even – Too tight will be hard to work with, too loose will look messy.
✅ Count your stitches – Each “V” shape across the row is one stitch.
✅ Don’t forget the turning chain – It keeps your edges straight!
✅ Practice! – Work several rows until you feel comfortable with the motion.
Now that you’ve mastered the single crochet stitch, you’re ready to start your first real crochet project!
