Step-by-Step Tutorial – Alpine Stitch
Alpine Stitch is a beautifully textured crochet stitch that creates a raised, diagonal pattern, perfect for blankets, scarves, and sweaters. This stitch combines front post double crochet (FPdc) and regular double crochet (dc) to achieve its signature look.
✨ Skill Level: Beginner-Intermediate
🧶 Materials Needed:
- Worsted weight yarn (or any yarn of your choice)
- Appropriate crochet hook (check yarn label for size recommendation)
- Scissors
- Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)
Step 1: Create Your Foundation Chain
- Start with a multiple of 2 chains + 1 extra for your foundation. (For example, chain 21 for a small swatch.)
Step 2: Row 1 – Double Crochet Across
- Yarn over (YO) and insert your hook into the third chain from the hook.
- Pull up a loop (you now have 3 loops on your hook).
- YO and pull through two loops.
- YO and pull through the remaining two loops.
- Repeat across the row to the end.
- Turn your work and chain 1.
Step 3: Row 2 – Single Crochet Across
- Insert your hook into the first stitch, YO, pull up a loop.
- YO and pull through both loops (this completes a single crochet).
- Repeat single crochet (sc) across the row.
- Turn your work and chain 2.
Step 4: Row 3 – Start the Alpine Pattern (Using Front Post Double Crochet – FPdc)
- YO, skip the first stitch, and make a regular double crochet (dc) in the next stitch.
- Front Post Double Crochet (FPdc):
- YO and insert your hook around the post of the dc from the previous row (instead of into the top of the stitch).
- YO and pull up a loop (you’ll have 3 loops on your hook).
- YO and pull through two loops.
- YO and pull through the last two loops.
- Repeat alternating dc and FPdc across the row.
- End with a dc in the last stitch. Turn your work and chain 1.
Step 5: Row 4 – Single Crochet Across
- Work a single crochet (sc) into each stitch across the row.
- Turn your work and chain 2.
Step 6: Row 5 – Offset Your Front Post Stitches
- Start with a FPdc this time: YO, insert hook around the post of the first dc from two rows below, complete a FPdc.
- Work a regular dc in the next stitch.
- Repeat alternating FPdc and dc across the row.
- End with a dc in the last stitch. Turn your work and chain 1.
Step 7: Repeat Rows 2-5 Until You Reach Desired Length
- Repeat Row 2 (sc across) after every Alpine Stitch row to create the pattern.
- Repeat Row 3 and Row 5 alternately to continue the Alpine Stitch texture.
Step 8: Finish Off & Weave in Ends
- Once you reach the desired length, cut your yarn and pull it through the last loop to secure.
- Use a tapestry needle to weave in your ends for a clean finish.
